Olajubutu On The Radar

Arkansas honorable mention All-American linebacker Sam Olajubutu has been named to the preseason watch list for another major award with Thursday's announcement that he is one of 42 candidates for the 2006 Lott Trophy.

"A Real Intense Dude..."

The Cedric's, Logan and Washington, on Gus Malzahn.
Logan and Monk each described Malzahn as "a perfectionist" with how he runs a practice. Washington agreed.

"He's a real intense dude," Washington said. "He's laid-back off the field, but once we get out here, it's all business. That's what you want."
I also noticed that John Aaron Rees is mentioned by Houston Dale in the Hogwired recap of Thursday's practice. He's been getting a lot of reps and looked surprisingly good to me. I think with Gus in charge (hopefully) we are going to discover that we have more players and playmaking capability than we were aware.

John Aaron's father, John Rees, was a pretty good receiver in his day. I remember him for the disputed catch falling out of bounds on the two yard line on Arkansas' first possession in the Big Shootout with Texas in 1969 that led to the Razorbacks' first touchdown.

Unfortunately I also remember him for being called for pass interference when he didn't hear the check-off by Montgomery, gave a little block that had no bearing whatsoever on the play, and the cornerback talked the official into making a call after a wide open Chuck Dicus caught the ball in the end zone for what would have been Arkansas' second touchdown. Ah, those yellow flags of Texas. What memories.

Both the Friday and Saturday practices are open to the public. Saturday scrimmage at 10 a.m. Should be fun to watch.

Fast Passing

Terry Wood writes today about Cedric Logan and the "new offense."

Cedric's name was called many times by Gus during passing drills Tuesday. He was playing at least two if not three receiver positions, but seemed to spend a lot of his time in the slot. It was obvious that he was a focus point in a positive way.

Houston Dale never used the slot position to isolate fast receivers on linebackers or force a safety up into short coverage. We are going to see Gus do that. The vertical game will be there, but defenses are going to have to pass cover both short and long with the idea being that safeties and linebackers are going to have to make choices. Wrong choice plus a good read by the QB and a big play will result.

And yes, the pace out there is very fast. We will be in better shape than anybody we play and that pace will work to our advantage.

Pads today, probably inside as the weather is expected to be stormy.

Wow...the last few days have been very rewarding. Over 3,000 views of the first day spring practice photos. (Thanks to Hogville.net and The Slop!)

And over 12,000 blog visits and nearly 24,000 page views since we started last August. (Sorry...yes...this is turning into a pride and braggadocio post.)

So now here we are...post #500. HogBlogger and I just want to say how much we appreciate everyone who has visited and...hopefully...found something useful or interesting in this space. We're looking forward to following the Razorbacks with you now and in the seasons ahead.

Arkansas 4, Wichita State 3

Hogwired.com: Willard's 11th-Inning Single Lifts Hogs Past Shockers, 4-3
Redshirt freshman shortstop Matt Willard was the hero on Tuesday night with a two-out RBI single up the middle in the top of the 11th inning to give No. 13 Arkansas a 4-3 win over No. 17 Wichita State in front of 4,515 fans at Eck Stadium.

Spring Practice - Day 2

I arrived at practice today and signed in at 4:35 using an alias and a fake address while joking with "big brother" at the sign-in desk. (Just kidding.) At a quarter to six o'clock I saw my first running play, a reverse, and at 12 minutes after six I saw my first handoff to a back in the backfield.

I'd say things have changed.

Houston Dale is keeping busy -- it appears he is taking a personal interest in coaching the punt returners. Gus and Alex Wood appear to be a good team. The offensive practice was tightly scripted. The coaches weren't all dressed alike as they were last year.

The defense is in full bore mode while the offense is in learning mode. Repetitions for the offense come fast and furious with Gus in charge. As the practice closed with 11 on 11, sloppy was the order of the day for the offense. It was obvious we had some tired fellas out there. They were kept busy all the time.

Things that I noticed on offense (besides the pace of practice) that foreshadow what we will see at times next season include: numerous pattern with five receivers; Hillis, McFadden, Felix Jones, Marcus Monk, and Cedric Washington on the field at the same time; double tight end sets where both tight ends might run streak routes right up the field; Cedric Logan, Felix Jones, Reggie Fish in the slot or split wide; pass plays that will cause the corners and safeties in cover 2 to have to make either/or decisions; an extensive package of screens and a healthy dose of speedy Michael Smith all over the field. Obviously Gus is going to put speed on the field and use it deceptively and aggressively.

Casey Dick still looks the best to me at quarterback. Mortensen can't throw long outs and corners very well, but throws good short and over the middle and appears to make good decisions. Robert Johnson's play was erratic, with the coaches being heard calling out, "don't be lazy" before his reps. He has a gun for an arm, but I still saw him struggling with footwork. At least now I get the feeling he knows he's struggling with footwork, as I saw him practicing his steps while not in the drill.

Receivers are being pushed for precision and exactness on their patterns. The number of steps and angles taken within the parts of a pass pattern is obviously very important to Gus. It will be interesting to see which receivers "step up."

We have enough offensive lineman to have three lines. Oh yeah, you can tell Markuson feels the pressure. He was coaching his butt off. Bobby Allen already has the corners looking good. Those guys are serious workers.

The coaches were using their public voice today. Lots of "freak" and "frickin" in their language. Herring was low key today - heard he was a wild man yesterday. Gus was the same Gus that we saw on the Springdale sidelines, still yelling out "Utah" occasionally but mostly seeming low key and extremely organized and focused.

Other than seeing the sets and watching the pass patterns, it will be hard to tell much about the offense for a while other than it has some vast differences from the Razorback offense of the last few years. They won't get good at this overnight.

The big question will be how long Houston Dale can keep his hands off the wheel on offense. In fact, I think he has the biggest learning curve of anyone out there.

Reports: Anderson To Missouri

Various sources this evening report that former Razorbacks assistant and current Alabama-Birmingham coach Mike Anderson will be announced as head coach of Missouri as soon as Sunday.

I'm happy for Mike who was always a fan favorite here in Fayetteville. Unfortunately, I'm afraid most would agree that he takes over a program that's currently in complete disarray.

One thing's for sure...the Hogs game against the Tigers in Columbia next season just got a whole lot more interesting.

Rollin' And Screamin'

Wow...two Nolan posts in the last week! Today he's quoted by the Evansville Courier & Press on the news that former Razorback Rashard Sullivan is transferring to the University of Southern Indiana Screaming Eagles.
Richardson considered Sullivan his second-best recruit that season.

"He could run the floor just like a gazelle," Richardson said. "I really thought he was an NBA-type player, I really did.

"It'd be surprising if he didn't lead them (USI) in rebounding and blocked shots," Richardson added later. "And he can score."

Scattered Basketball Shots

Watching the NCAA Tournament games really makes it obvious that the Hogs can't shoot at the level needed to have real success. Not only do you need two or more solid three point shooters, you need someone that can shoot from 22+ feet out if needed. Remember that Michael dished to John Paxson and Steve Kerr at key points in the NBA Finals to win championships.

Do free throws count as "shooting?" I think so.

The articles and comments regarding the Razorbacks failure to (or needing to) press in order to beat Bucknell have been interesting. The simple fact is that Stan didn't have enough players ready to play the press. Bucknell had played nine players within the first 10 minutes of the game. Arkansas basically used a seven man rotation. We didn't have the man power ready to compete with the press.

Maybe if we had to guard people that can actually shoot in practice our three point defense might improve.

So whose fault is this? Recruiting comments aside, the non-conference season needs to be better used by Heath. In December he didn't play McGowan and McCurdy very much against the much weaker opponents. He also missed the opportunity to get touches on offense to Steven Hill in the post. Cranford, supposedly a "pure shooter," played like a scared little boy for about 2 minutes a game for a few games and Heath gave up on him rather than forcing him to compete and possibly getting in a position to contribute. We needed those guys to be able to perform at Tournament time, but we failed to get them ready by giving them minutes against the weak opponents.

A seven man rotation is not going to get it done. Concentrating on a seven man rotation in December really didn't serve us well in the long run. If you want to take the position that Heath "got all he could" out of this team and had a successful season then you are basically saying we are still a few recruiting classes away from making a run at the Sweet 16.

I personally feel we underachieved. However, we almost collapsed into disaster. So all in all the strong finish was appreciated.

By the way, let Ronnie go if he wants to. I don't think he's ready, but then I didn't think Scotty Thurman was ready either and he's made a nice living in Europe and the Middle East.

I'm glad that Billy Packer has exposed himself yet again as an idiot. And even more so than usual...saying prior to the Tournament that three eventual Sweet 16 teams did not deserve to be in the field. The Big Ten was obviously way overrated. The ACC isn't that strong. Duke will crash quickly unless the officials play favorites for them, which is not beyond happening. Texas, Memphis, Washington and Florida in the Final Four. (Okay...Florida probably won't make it...but I thought I should include someone who Arkansas actually beat.)

Enjoy the games this weekend. I know I will.

It's Football Weather...

Spring has come forth in Northwest Arkansas with snow in the forecast. The Northwest Arkansas Times comes forth with the first installment of a series previewing the Hogs spring football practices.

The Arkansas Times Daily Blog cautions "don't necessarily expect the Hogs to make a 180 degree shift to the passing game."

I'm hearing that the new offense will feature "the old terminology," the traditional Houston Dale running game, plus aspects of the Malzahn offense, plus a significant contribution by Alex Wood in "pulling it all together." Gus was said to be extremely pleased with how things were working out.

I'm looking forward to checking it out.

...And Out

As expected (or decided) prior to the game by the sports world in general, the Hogs lose to Bucknell.

Second half free throws certainly were a big factor in the loss. The free throw line is where you have the game in your hands. Had we shot better from the line, we would probably have won the game.

The Hogs played hard. Bucknell has a great defense in the half court. Their offense was clever in setting up threes and they knocked them down. You have to give them credit. They're a very tough, solid basketball team.

People talk about guard play in the NCAA Tournament as being the determining factor in who wins or loses. While I think guard play is important, it seems to me that the team that can play "roughest" the best tends to win. Officials make it to the Final Four by calling less instead of more.

The game was very physical. The Hogs have struggled all years against physical teams. When you are playing a very physical team you tend to get tired and frustrated and not shoot very well, especially from the foul line.

Nolan's Hogs tended to do well in the Big Dance because the rougher the game became the more they liked it. I coach teams by having them play very rough in practice so that any game seems easier. Plus, the referees only have so many whistle toots they are going to use for each team, so rougher doesn't necessarily result in more fouls. The rougher bunch usually wins it seems.

The very definition of "tournament tough" includes playing with poise, executing well and shooting well, in a rough game.

It was a good game. There's not much to be critical of in our play. While we missed free throws and some key shots, we made two more field goals and one more free throw. Those guys were just as good as we were and could play rougher better. Plus, they could shoot threes.

However, I'll confess that as a fan I felt we were playing the sporting world plus the referees (letting the rough play go, which disadvantaged the Hogs), plus the announcers. Bucknell makes a great story for CBS and the tournament. But that's just part of being a fan.

Hats off to Bucknell. The Hogs made an amazing run to even make the Dance.

I look forward to next year.

Seriously

Terry Wood's article today is spot on:
Personally, I like the tough talk and the swagger. To me, a little chest-thumping is part of the entertainment.

Besides, no team can be successful until it truly believes it can be.

However, such talk has to be backed up with action for it to be meaningful, and while the Razorbacks talked the talk last week in Nashville, they did not walk the walk.

And The Legend Grows

U.S. Reed / Darrell Walker (AP Photo)Man...25 years ago. I remember it like it was yesterday. I was 10 years old and on the living room floor. Usually my job was to adjust the volume or change the channel when my Dad wanted to watch one of the other four stations that we got over the antenna.

But not this day. No one dared touch the dial on March 14, 1981. We were too busy watching NCAA Tournament history...and experiencing a day that will live in the annals of Razorback sports forever.

You can relive it all over again here: U.S. Reed Makes "The Shot".

Bob Holt does a little reliving of U.S. history in today's Democrat-Gazette.

It's number 16 on the USA Today list of the greatest 63 games in NCAA Tournament history.

Joey Johnston of the Tampa Tribune says it has become "heavenly in hog lore."

And Michael Wilbon believes it's a part of a day that lives in NCAA upset history.

No Respect For Hogs

Fox Sports has placed the Hogs on their list of "10 Potential Upsets" for the NCAA Tournament first round.

And Grant Hall's article recorded the lack of respect granted by CBS' Seth Davis and by ESPN, with both expecting the Hogs to fall to Bucknell.

I hope Bucknell is reading all of this and looks ahead to Memphis in the second round.

Arkansas needs to play angry but not play stupid. Good defense, own the paint, get to the foul line. Running wild in transition opportunities, short possessions with quick shots and jacking 3's won't get it done.

Who will show up? I suspect we will be okay and have the opportunity to pound Memphis.

Jacking 3's

Jacking three pointers was the theme of this game. Florida made 10 of 15. The Hogs made 6 out of 21. Ferguson 1-7. Hunter 0-2 - what was he doing taking 3's so early in the shot clock? McCurdy 0-3. Ferguson basically shot us out of the game, going 2-13 overall, plus contributing 4 turnovers. The guards in general didn't work at all to get Modica involved in the offense - he had only 8 shot attempts.

The Hogs were outrebounded by 10, but made up for that in steals and turnovers. Brewer and Thomas had really good games. Hunter's minutes were pretty much wasted. Townes needed a kick in the rear, more post opportunities and more minutes. If Hill, Townes and Hunter don't start contributing again the Hogs stay in the big dance will be short.

Even though the Hogs had only 11 turnovers, several possessions were wasted by either hurried or unforced turnovers and quick shots.

So basically we lost this one like many of the early conference games. Jacking 3's and not taking the ball into the paint and getting to the free throw line. Still Florida had to shoot out of their minds to beat us by 3 points.

Sorry to see the streak end. These Hogs have been fighting hard.

Pride And Tradition?

Did they just mature as a team? Or was it the embarrassment against Ole Miss? Or is it the uniforms?

Whatever it is, I like it. Drive, intensity...yes, even toughness have been displayed by the Razorback basketball team since the loss to Ole Miss.

Getting over the hump and winning an SEC tournament game following five straight conference victories has to be sweet for Stan Heath. I know this recent win streak is sweet for the fans.

Florida today will be interesting. They'll want payback for getting manhandled in Fayetteville. I hope the Hogs are determined to show that was not a fluke.

Putting on that 1978 uniform (or at least a fairly close replica - length of shorts and the absence of the former Hog basketball logo of the Hog jumping through the "A" are noted as differences) just has to instill a feeling of pride and tradition to this team. Especially for Ronnie Brewer. He basically wears his dad's shirt. And like his dad, his era can be marked with the "return" of Razorback basketball glory. Hopefully.

Right now the team is carrying the uniforms well. The only downer in this is that it's reminded me that I'm still angry at myself for not buying that Sidney Moncrief Razorback jersey long ago when it was offered.

Brewer, Modica and Ferguson Are All-SEC

SECSports.com: 2006 SEC Men's Basketball Awards Announced
Arkansas' Eric Ferguson won the SEC's Sixth Man of the Year award. Ferguson ranks third on the team in minutes played despite starting only six games this season and is its fifth leading scorer (8.0 ppg).
Ronnie Brewer named first team All-SEC and Jonathon Modica on the second team.

We're Talking About Practice, Man...Practice!

Uh oh...it's deja vu time. Wally says Houston Dale should re-open fall practices this year.
"I'm trying to decide what is best for everyone: the team, fans and media," Nutt said Monday.

He sounded as if he was leaning toward two days of open practices and three closed, but banning all cell phones during practice time and limiting photographers — video and still — to the first 15 or 20 minutes of action.

That is what Texas did, and it obviously was a good decision.
But the real question is...will that be enough to satisfy Mike Irwin and Nate Allen?

Baseball Hogs Ranked 10th Nationally

Somebody finally alerted the baseball SIDs...uh...I mean coaches...around the country that 13-1 Arkansas might be pretty good. The Hogs moved up four spots in this week's USA Today/ESPN Coaches' poll.

And once again, the SEC is by far the most impressive league with Tennessee, LSU, South Carolina and Arkansas all ranked among the nation's top 10. Former #1 Florida as well as Ole Miss and Mississippi State are also ranked among the top 25.

TipsterHog PhotoSome other baseball notes:

* Junior first baseman Danny Hamblin tore up Hawaii’s Les Murakami Stadium during the First Hawaii Title Rainbow Baseball Tournament, winning MVP honors. Hamblin finished the tournament with a .450 batting average, three doubles, three home runs, four runs scored, 12 RBI, a 1.050 slugging percentage and a .478 on-base percentage.

* Sophomore pitcher Nick Schmidt is holding opponents to a .062 batting average this season, allowing just five hits over four games. He has a 0.69 ERA in 29 innings of work. Schmidt has not allowed an extra-base hit this season and has not surrendered a hit to a left-handed hitter this season. (Good lord...that's just comically insane.)

* Arkansas is 36-2 in non-conference action over the past two seasons.

Did It Ever Occur To You?

I can't help but notice the little noise regarding the Lady Razorbacks basketball program. Their 30 point loss in the conference tournament combined with the whatever number (9 wasn't it?) straight losses they sustained after a surprising conference start should be a great embarrassment to a program that was having 20 wins seasons, NCAA Tournament hopes each year, and had made a recent Final Four appearance.

This article reminded me of a quote from Gary Blair that I especially liked regarding his players missing 3 point shots -- "but I was wide open, coach..."

Blair's response, "did it ever occur to you there's a reason you are wide open?"

I told my rec. league team that many times on the basketball floor those things that seem easy to do are really just traps the other team wants us to snare ourselves in.

Speaking of Gary Blair, here's an excellent article about him. Apparently he is a little more appreciated in the Aggie world than he was by the Razorback women's athletic department.

Leaders who change things that are working fine just to put their "stamp" on things rarely succeed in doing anything other than just applying their "stamp." Unfortunately traditional measures of success -- wins, NCAA appearances, attendance, profits and shareholder value (Dude, where did those last two come from?) -- tend to suffer as the "stamp" tends to be the sole goal of the leader.

Fox Sports Has Hogs At #8 Seed

Michael Lazurus of FoxSports.com puts the Hogs at the #8 seed in the Minneapolis region against Creighton.

Wednesday night's game against Mississippi State was a lot of fun after I managed to get to the arena. Traffic was unbelievable. My normal 20 minute drive to lot 56 took about an hour. It seemed there were massive numbers of people walking in late or outside looking for tickets.

The Hogs displayed their fight and intensity up until the 12 minute point of the second half. Loved the double technicals and Heath stomping around the sidelines. At the 12 minute mark those other guys from a few games ago swapped back into the Razorback uniforms just to remind us of how we had been playing most of the conference season. Suddenly we were taking quick shots and the defensive intensity just totally dropped off. Hopefully the reminder will serve a useful purpose for this team for the next few games. When you let down, people can come back on you. There is a way this team has to play to be successful.

It was good to see the Hog fans so excited and attendance so good. The traffic people have some work to do.

And yes, I had to sit in my own seats for the first time this year.
