Christmas Is For Quarterbacks

The Mobile Register published an article on Christmas Day talking about the great quarterbacks we have in the South and their college directions.

Dave Curtis of the Orlando Sentinal also had a nice write up on Mitch Mustain.

While in Atlanta for a television appearance, Mitch listed Notre Dame, Tennesee, Alabama and Arkansas as the top contenders.

The common thread in Mitch's thinking seems to center around which coaching staff and system offers him the greatest opportunity to succeed in the NFL one day.

A recent Sporting News article (subscription link not included) discussed the general lack of quarterbacking skills across the league today. Included in the discussion was the thought that "spread" offenses in college were partly to blame for the lack of development of NFL prospects - citing Alex Smith as a prime example.

Do you think Gus Mazahn and the use of the "spread" offense at Arkansas hurts or helps with the probability that Mitch chooses Arkansas? It's an interesting question.

My take is that no quarterback was ever going to be prepared for the pros running the now dead Houston Dale offense.

Could they under the new Gus offense? TBD...but at least there's a chance that it could happen.

I do agree that the greatest changes in offense now seem to be "bubbling up" from the bottom (high school) to the top (NFL).

I'm not sure if this has happened before...but it seems like the NFL is less offensively innovative now than it once was in the past. (Too much money at stake?)

Having said that, Tom Moore and the Colts are an exception. Ask any NFL owner if he wants to put an offense like the Colts on the field and I'll guarantee the answer will be "yes, please."

I agree with TipsterHog. I think Gus' offense will be a breathe of fresh air and while I guess you can consider it a spread offense there are plenty of sets that are setup for the power game. They're just not always a RB, FB, and 2 TE's. And I have no fear that HDN will still have the off-tackle right and off-tackle left play in the playbook. If all else fails we know we can go back to that.

On the comment about Alex Smith. I'm sure Mitch would be happy to get Alex Smith' money three or four years from now. It's not like these NFL teams don't test these guys like Alex Smith out before the draft. They should've been able to tell he had an average arm with above average accuracy. They get caught up in the hype. Alex Smith was not nearly highly regarded as Mitch Mustain coming out of high school. If he has a halfway decent college career he will be drafted merely on potential.

That's my three cents.
