Hogs are Rolled Over – Quick Thoughts

Much better performance on defense. Outside linebacker still ran out of a couple of running plays on one series just as he did against USC – which basically gave Alabama a touchdown drive – but all in all the defense played well enough for us to win. The 10 men on the field thing on the last touchdown was a little embarrassing, but hey, I guess you can only be so organized after letting 40 seconds run off the clock followed by a full time-out before you line up.

Special teams, for the most part, pretty good. Peyton Hillis needs a bit of coaching on lining up for punts when the punter has a 20 mph wind at his back. It was good to see a punt block at a key time. A touchdown following would’ve been nice, but in reality was a lot to expect.

I know Alabama has a good defense, but our offensive line obviously can’t pass block. Our offensive coordinator obviously can’t put together a game plan that effectively manages our strengths and weaknesses. Between the two, the quarterback was basically put into impossible situations. For those of you waiting for the arrival of Mitch Mustain – urgent memo – he is not going to do any better in this offense.

By the way, Corso on ESPN said today that “USC hasn’t played anyone yet.”

I’m just glad we stayed in the game with them. Apparently our program should have the near term goal of just becoming “someone” again.
